Pakistan’s aviation sector is gearing up for substantial advancement as Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plans to restart its flights to the United States, signalling a crucial development in international travel links.
A new chapter in aviation relations between Pakistan and the U.S. began with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). DG CAA Nadir Shafi Dar confirmed that Pakistan would soon fulfil its financial obligations to the FAA, paving the way for an FAA delegation’s visit to Pakistan by early spring.
This partnership aims to restore Pakistan’s ‘Category One’ status, enabling the restart of direct flights from Pakistan to the U.S. The suspension of PIA’s U.S. routes, which began in 2017, included six weekly flights with routes to New York and Chicago.
Prospects for UK Flight Resumption
Nadir Shafi Dar also revealed plans for a UK Department for Transport (DfT) delegation to visit Pakistan next month, with preliminary online meetings scheduled for December. These efforts target the resumption of PIA’s flights to the UK by March, following positive evaluations similar to those by the European Union.

The EU’s positive assessment will likely clear the path for restarting PIA flights to the UK. Previously, PIA operated 21 weekly flights to various UK cities, significantly boosting the airline’s revenue.
The anticipated return of these international flights is set to enhance PIA’s operational capabilities and financial health significantly. With the restoration of direct routes to the U.S. and expanded connections to the UK, PIA is ready to reclaim its status in the global aviation market, providing improved service options for passengers and bolstering economic ties between Pakistan and these key destinations.
