Gaming subscription costs are becoming a stronger reason U.S. players cancel Xbox Game Pass Essential, PlayStation Plus Essential and Nintendo Switch Online, according to new Circana consumer survey data.
Among users who recently cancelled Nintendo Switch Online, 50% said cost was a factor despite liking the service, up from 40% in the first quarter of 2026. For Xbox Game Pass Essential and PlayStation Plus Essential, the share reached 40%, compared with 37% in the first quarter.
Circana Executive Director for Games Mat Piscatella cautioned that the figures measure the reasons given by people who already cancelled. They do not mean that more than 40% of subscribers have quit, nor do they establish that the overall cancellation rate has increased.
The findings come as subscription pricing and value have shifted across the console market. Microsoft reduced Xbox Game Pass Ultimate in the United States from $29.99 to $22.99 a month in April and removed day-one access to future Call of Duty releases.
Nintendo Switch Online currently costs $19.99 a year for an individual U.S. membership, according to Nintendo. Despite that lower annual price, its former subscribers recorded the largest increase in cost-related cancellations among the three services measured by Circana.

Circana reported that U.S. video game subscription spending was still growing year-on-year in July, underscoring that the cancellation survey measures consumer motivations rather than overall subscription-market contraction.
