Robert Lewandowski has signed with Chicago Fire FC through the 2027-28 Major League Soccer season after leaving Barcelona as a free agent, the club announced Monday.
Major League Soccer said the 37-year-old Poland striker will occupy Designated Player and international roster spots.
Lewandowski chose Chicago after interest from AC Milan and the Saudi Pro League.
The Athletic reported that Lewandowski agreed to a two-year contract with the Chicago Fire. Lewandowski visited Chicago earlier this month to inspect the club’s facilities and discuss the project.
Chicago Fire head coach and director of football Gregg Berhalter said the club wanted to recruit world-class players.
Berhalter said Lewandowski would be a strong signing for the Chicago Fire and Major League Soccer. Lewandowski joins MLS after Lionel Messi’s move to Inter Miami increased global attention on the league.

The Polish international left Barcelona after winning his third league title in four seasons with the Spanish club.
The move also gives Chicago Fire a high-profile signing before the club’s planned shift to McDonald’s Park in the South Loop. Chicago’s large Polish community formed part of the local backdrop to the transfer.
