Google has announced a $75 million grant initiative for workforce development and education organizations to teach Americans AI skills.
According to a report by CNET, James Manyika, Google’s senior vice president for research, technology, and society, stated that “AI can significantly accelerate economic growth when people have the right resources and training.”
In addition to the grants, Google is introducing the “Google AI Essentials” online course. This course, available on Coursera for $49, provides a 10-hour curriculum to impart foundational AI skills.
Students who complete the course will receive a certification. Institutions such as Miami Dade College and Darden Executive Education and Lifelong Learning will offer this course to students and professionals. Citigroup plans to utilize it for employee upskilling.
The initiative aligns with Google’s objective to address the skills gap created by rapid technological advancements.
To foster a more tech-savvy workforce, Google provides grants and creates educational programs amid high demand for tech workers.
These educational efforts enhance tech companies’ brand images, develop local talent, and facilitate entry into new markets.
Prominent philanthropic organizations in the tech industry include Microsoft Philanthropies, Amazon Future Engineer, and Meta Elevate.
Goodwill, which focuses on job training and employment assistance, is an initial beneficiary of Google’s AI Opportunity Fund.
Goodwill CEO Steve Preston commented, “We can equip US job seekers with essential digital and AI skills, opening doors to well-paying jobs and improving economic mobility.”
