ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court’s death sentence ruling against Waseem Abbas will stand after a three-member bench dismissed his petition in the murder of his former wife, Shahnaz Bibi.
Abbas had challenged the sentence after courts convicted him of killing Bibi following her decision to obtain a divorce through a family court.
Justice Muhammad Hashim Khan Kakar authored the court’s detailed four-page judgment. The Supreme Court said Pakistan’s Constitution protects a woman’s right to seek divorce.
The court said violence against a woman for exercising that legal right amounts to an attack on the Constitution and the law.
