Pop singer Olivia Rodrigo’s “Serena Joy” will be released digitally on August 24 after limited-edition CDs went on sale August 21 at Analogue Records in Orange County.
The 23-year-old singer wrote the track around the “The Handmaid’s Tale” character Serena Joy.
Proceeds from sales of the song will help fund Rodrigo’s Daisy Chain Fields festival, a women-led music event scheduled for August 29.
The song draws on Serena Joy’s story as a character who advocated conservative ideals before being subjected to restrictions created by the same system.
Fans reacted to the release across social media, with posts supporting Rodrigo’s focus on women’s rights and expressing anticipation for the digital launch.
