Cristiano Ronaldo hit back at critics before Portugal’s World Cup last-16 match against Spain, saying they had tried to “kill” him for the past 23 years.
The 41-year-old Portugal captain spoke on Sunday at the home of the Dallas Cowboys before what he has called his last World Cup.
Ronaldo admitted he is no longer the player he once was. However, he said he still had an important role for Portugal, whether he played or not.
“I am not the player I used to be,” Ronaldo said. He added that he was “not doing too bad” after scoring three goals at the tournament.
Ronaldo scored twice against Uzbekistan in Portugal’s 5-0 group-stage win. He also converted a penalty in the 2-1 last-32 victory over Croatia.

The former Manchester United, Juventus and Real Madrid forward refused to set a date for the end of his international career.
“I will stop when I choose, not when you choose,” Ronaldo told reporters when asked again about his future.
Ronaldo said this was the World Cup he had enjoyed the most because of the emotions around it. He said criticism after turning 40 had helped him grow.
