Portugal beat Croatia 2-1 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 in Toronto on Thursday after substitute Gonçalo Ramos scored a stoppage-time header.
Ramos met Rafael Leão’s cross in the fourth minute of added time to send Portugal into a last-16 match against Spain in Dallas on Monday.
Croatia thought they had forced extra time seconds later, but officials ruled out Joško Gvardiol’s goal for offside. Ivan Perišić had put Croatia ahead in the 53rd minute, slotting the ball under Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa.
Cristiano Ronaldo then had a goal disallowed for offside after controlling a long pass. Portugal equalised after a VAR check showed Nikola Vlašić had grabbed Renato Veiga inside the penalty area.
Ronaldo converted the penalty down the middle for his first World Cup knockout-stage goal. Costa kept Portugal level when he pushed Mateo Kovačić’s low shot onto the post.
Petar Sučić also had a goal ruled out for offside as Croatia created the clearer chances in the second half.

Ronaldo came off in the 81st minute for Rúben Neves. Mario Pašalić went close late on, but his far-post header bounced just wide before Ramos delivered Portugal’s winner.
