WASHINGTON, United States: US strikes Iranian tankers in a new round of fighting after Iran twice targeted a Navy warship with ballistic missiles, U.S. Central Command said Tuesday.
CENTCOM said American forces struck five crude-oil carriers on September 8. Strikes hit four vessels in the Gulf of Oman and one near Iran’s Kharg Island.
The command said the U.S. warship evaded both attempted missile attacks and that the attacks harmed no American personnel.
CENTCOM also said U.S. forces ordered crews to abandon the tankers before striking them and rendering the vessels inoperable.

Iran offered a different account of the wider clashes. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said two U.S. warships had been hit and damaged by ballistic missiles, according to the semi-official Fars news agency.
The IRGC also said it launched missiles at U.S. forces at Jordan’s Al Azraq military base. A U.S. official said the Iranian launches toward Jordan were ineffective and that American forces there were accounted for.
Jordan’s military said its air defences intercepted 18 ballistic missiles, while two others fell in unpopulated areas.
The latest strikes followed a weekend clash in which CENTCOM said U.S. forces struck three Iranian crude-oil carriers after attempted attacks on an aircraft carrier and a destroyer.
