Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) introduced a new series of semiconductors designed for AI-enabled business laptops and desktops on Tuesday to capture a larger share of the burgeoning AI PC market.
AMD announced in a press release that these chips would be integrated into HP and Lenovo systems starting in the second quarter of 2024.
AI-enabled PCs can directly operate large-language models and technology-driven apps on the devices, bypassing cloud computing.
The company revealed its latest Ryzen PRO 8040 Series, which targets business laptops and mobile workstations. The AMD Ryzen PRO 8000 Series also caters to desktop processors for business environments.
Following the announcement, AMD’s stock increased by more than 2% in early trading.
Industry experts suggest that the emergence of AI PCs may revive the PC market as consumers seek to upgrade to newer, AI-capable systems.
The rise of generative AI technology has sharply increased the demand for advanced semiconductors that support sophisticated AI applications.
In the AI PC sector, AMD competes with giants like Intel and Nvidia, the latter being renowned for its leadership in graphics processing units (GPUs).
In January, AMD launched the Ryzen 8000G Series of desktop chips, which are designed to handle the intensive workloads associated with AI tasks.
Simultaneously, Nvidia introduced its “GeForce RTX SUPER” desktop GPUs and announced collaborations with Acer, ASUS, Dell Technologies, HP, Lenovo, and Samsung to feature this technology in their upcoming AI laptops.
Intel has also projected ambitious plans, stating in January that it expects to ship approximately 40 million AI PCs in 2024.
