ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: A 5.3 earthquake jolted Islamabad, Lahore and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with tremors felt across several cities, officials said.
The National Seismic Monitoring Centre said the quake originated at a depth of 174 kilometres. The centre placed the epicentre in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region.
Tremors were reported in Peshawar, Swat, Shangla, Buner, Lower Dir and adjoining areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Lahore also experienced shaking.
The United States Geological Survey separately recorded a 5.5-magnitude earthquake near Jurm, Afghanistan, at a depth of 216.7 kilometres. No immediate casualties or damage were reported.

The tremors came days after a 5.9-magnitude earthquake shook Islamabad, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on June 27.
The National Seismic Monitoring Centre said that the earlier quake also originated in the Hindu Kush region at a depth of 178 kilometres.
Pakistan lies near the boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, making several northern and western areas prone to earthquakes.
The 2005 earthquake in Azad Jammu and Kashmir killed more than 73,000 people and left millions homeless.
