KARACHI: Police detained three suspects after University of Karachi professor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Arif Khan Saqi alleged he was assaulted and held for several hours following a road-rage incident in Safoora Goth.
Prof. Saqi, chairman of the university’s Department of Islamic Learning, said in a video statement that he was travelling to the University of Karachi in an online cab when a double-cabin vehicle struck the car.
He said he asked the vehicle’s occupants to compensate the cab driver for the damage and provide their contact details, noting that the driver might not be able to bear the repair cost.
Prof. Saqi alleged that the occupants and their security guards then assaulted him and the cab driver, including striking them on the head with the butt of a rifle. He also alleged that the guards fired shots into the air.

— Ali Tanoli (@alitanoli889) September 8, 2026The professor said the group later took him and the driver to a hotel and held them there for several hours. He alleged that Rangers personnel arrived during the incident, asked for his name and left without taking action.
Prof. Saqi said Malir Cantonment police later intervened and rescued him. Sachal police said a medico-legal certificate had been prepared after he was found injured.
Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar took notice of the incident and sought a report from the Senior Superintendent of Police East. The SSP later informed the home minister that three suspects had been detained and that legal action would follow.

The University of Karachi Teachers’ Association condemned the alleged assault and demanded the arrest of everyone involved.
The incident also triggered a protest by Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba (IJT) outside the University of Karachi, disrupting traffic on the route from University Road towards Safoora Goth.
