The IRGC intelligence chief killed in Tehran has become the latest flashpoint in the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel, according to a statement issued by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on Monday.

The IRGC said Israeli forces killed Brigadier General Seyed Majid Khademi, head of its Intelligence Organisation, in an early morning airstrike on Tehran. The group described the attack as “criminal and terrorist” and blamed both Israel and the United States.

In its statement, the IRGC praised Khademi’s decades of service and described him as a central figure in protecting the ideals of the Iranian Revolution.

It also said he played a major role in strengthening Iran’s intelligence and security system, especially in efforts to counter foreign threats. Iranian officials further claimed his work helped prevent infiltration attempts and destabilisation plots over many years.

Iran’s top intelligence chief has been killed in US-Israeli air strikes a day after Donald Trump threatened to send the country “to hell”.

Later, Israeli authorities appeared to signal involvement in the operation. Defence Minister Israel Katz said he had been briefed on the strike during a military assessment with Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir.

That remark came shortly after Iran publicly announced Khademi’s death, further intensifying attention on the widening regional confrontation.

In response, the IRGC said it had launched the 97th wave of retaliatory attacks. According to the statement, the operation involved a mix of missiles and drones aimed at what it called the invading US-Israeli coalition.

The announcement points to a rapidly escalating cycle of attack and response, with both sides signalling that the confrontation is far from over. The latest strike comes amid a broader war that erupted on February 28 after a series of high-profile assassinations.

Those killings reportedly included Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, as well as several senior military officials and civilians. The latest reported death of Khademi adds to the growing list of senior figures killed during the conflict.
