Australia Test and ODI captain Pat Cummins backed calls concerning Imran Khan’s medical care, saying the jailed former Pakistan prime minister should receive his court-directed assessment and be treated with dignity.

Cummins posted his support on X while sharing comments from former Australia captain Greg Chappell, who was among international cricketers expressing concern about Imran’s medical treatment.

The Australian captain said he hoped the court-ordered medical assessment would proceed and that family visits would continue, adding that Imran should be “treated with the dignity anyone deserves.”

His intervention followed a letter from 22 former international captains to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif urging authorities to ensure appropriate medical care for Imran. A similar appeal by former captains was sent earlier this year. The latest international appeal has also been reported by the Associated Press.

Adding my support here to GC and the other former international captains. I hope the court ordered medical assessment be allowed to run its course, and that family visits continue. I hope Imran Khan is treated with the dignity anyone deserves https://t.co/L1L512wXao

The Supreme Court of Pakistan on August 18 directed authorities to transfer Imran to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for examination and treatment by a multidisciplinary medical board. He was instead taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) before returning to Adiala Jail.

Imran, founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has been imprisoned since August 2023 following convictions in cases against him.

The federal government has rejected allegations that he has been mistreated or denied access to family members, lawyers or doctors, saying he has received more than 900 visits since his imprisonment.

Cummins’ comments came after the Pakistan Cricket Board complained to Sky Sports over an interview with Imran’s sons aired during the first day of Pakistan’s Test against England at Lord’s, according to the supplied report.
