QUETTA, Balochistan: Five Washuk workers killed in Mashkail town were from Punjab, after armed men opened fire on shops near the Pakistan-Iran border, officials said Sunday.
Washuk Deputy Commissioner Abdul Majeed Sarparah said the attackers were riding motorcycles when they fired at labourers working in the town.
Police officials said the five men suffered multiple bullet injuries and died at the scene. The assailants escaped after the firing.
Police and other security personnel reached the site after receiving information about the attack. They shifted the bodies to a government health facility in Mashkail.

Officials said legal formalities were underway before arrangements to send the bodies to their native towns in Punjab.
Security forces and law enforcement agencies launched a search operation in the area to trace the attackers, police officials said.

The attack came amid Operation Shaban and other counterterrorism operations in Balochistan. Security officials have said forces killed 109 militants in the province since July 5.
Balochistan has seen repeated attacks on workers and travellers from Punjab in recent years. Earlier killings in Kalat, Barkhan, Gwadar, Musakhail and Panjgur.
