KARACHI, Sindh: The Mir Raza Ali autopsy dispute widened Wednesday after police chief Azad Khan rejected concerns raised by Police Surgeon Dr Samia Syed over the post-mortem findings.

Additional Inspector General of Police Karachi, Azad Khan, told local news channel ARY News that the concerned medico-legal officer prepared the report. He said police based their assessment on that medical document.

Dr Samia had questioned whether the report corresponded with photographs of Ali’s body. She said the images appeared to show swelling and discolouration that required closer examination for possible injuries.

The police surgeon also raised questions about the reported direction of the bullet. However, Khan said she had formed her opinion from photographs and had not personally examined the body.

Khan said Dr Samia should submit her observations in writing through the prescribed procedure rather than discussing them through the media. He added that police did not prepare or issue post-mortem reports.

The Karachi police chief said authorities could exhume the body for another examination if Ali’s family requested a second post-mortem. The supplied report did not identify the medico-legal officer who conducted the original examination.

Ali’s body was recovered on July 29 from bushes near Shahi Qila in Gulistan-e-Jauhar, opposite the University of Karachi. The report said he had a gunshot wound to the chest and had been missing since the previous day.
