Former President Donald Trump expressed concerns on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” that a TikTok ban might inadvertently boost Facebook, which he criticized as an “enemy of the people.”
He acknowledged TikTok’s mixed aspects but emphasized the national security risks due to its Chinese ownership. Yet, Trump highlighted that eliminating TikTok could magnify Facebook’s influence, a scenario he opposes.
While TikTok poses security threats, Trump pointed out that Facebook faces similar privacy and security challenges. He argued against enhancing Facebook’s dominance by removing TikTok from the competitive landscape.
Contrasting Trump’s stance, President Joe Biden indicated a willingness to sign legislation banning TikTok if Congress passes it. Trump acknowledged TikTok’s popularity, especially among younger users, but reiterated the security compromise it could entail due to Chinese access.
He criticized Facebook’s role in national discourse and elections, suggesting that a TikTok ban would disproportionately benefit Facebook to the detriment of the public interest.
