Former Indian cricket captain and commentator Sunil Gavaskar has proposed financial penalties and contract reassessments for British players who exit the Indian Premier League (IPL) prematurely to participate in the T20 series against Pakistan.
In his latest column for India Today, Gavaskar expressed his discontent with English cricketers who forsake their IPL obligations, suggesting that franchises should revise their agreements with such players. He recommended the implementation of substantial fines and terminating contracts, which would involve salary cuts for the players involved.
Gavaskar also highlighted the IPL’s unique financial contributions, noting that it provides a 10% commission to other cricket boards, a practice that is not typical in other leagues. He raised concerns about the equity of this arrangement, questioning the benefits reaped by the IPL when players depart for international duties.
Gavaskar’s critique highlights several British cricketers leaving the IPL to represent England in the ongoing series against Pakistan.
