BEIJING, China: China rejected what it called China AI fearmongering after Anthropic Chief Executive Dario Amodei urged Washington to maintain a technological lead over Beijing.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said Monday that confrontation and “vicious competition” would disrupt global artificial intelligence governance.

Amodei had argued in a weekend essay that a Chinese lead in advanced AI could pose security risks for the United States and other democracies. He also called for a broader slowdown in the development of increasingly capable AI systems.

OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman, Google DeepMind chair Demis Hassabis and Elon Musk expressed general support for Amodei’s essay. They did not specifically endorse his position on China. Beijing, however, has also voiced its own concerns about rapid AI development.

China’s Minister of State Security Chen Yixin wrote in the state-run China Cyberspace magazine that hostile actors could use AI for propaganda and influence operations that threaten political, institutional and ideological security.

Chen also cited U.S.-developed AI systems as potential cybersecurity threats. Chinese President Xi Jinping separately warned in July that artificial intelligence should remain under human control.

The dispute comes ahead of a planned September 24 meeting between U.S. and Chinese leaders, where AI governance is expected to be among the topics discussed.
