WASHINGTON, United States: The frontier AI regulation debate intensified after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for slower development of increasingly capable artificial intelligence systems.

In an essay titled “We Must Pace the Frontier,” Amodei argued that AI capabilities are advancing faster than existing safety measures. He called for a deliberate slowdown rather than a complete halt.

Amodei proposed stronger independent oversight, common safety thresholds across major AI laboratories and international coordination.

Other lawmakers sought international standards, congressional hearings and faster federal action. Cybersecurity executive John Walsh, however, warned that a unilateral U.S. slowdown could leave other countries advancing without equivalent restrictions.

Former Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan offered a separate regulatory argument. She said existing consumer-protection, competition and cybersecurity laws already give authorities tools to pursue dangerous or defective AI products.
