Sarmad Khoosat’s acclaimed film ‘Kamli’ is poised to make its UK television debut on Channel 4, a development met with great enthusiasm.
Khoosat shared the news on Facebook: “Very happy and truly humbled to announce that Kamli will have its UK television premiere and OTT release on the prestigious Channel 4 this September.”
The premiere is part of Channel 4’s South Asian Film Season, which begins on September 8. Curated by Nasreen Kabir, an expert in Indian cinema, the season will showcase eight films from South Asia, including works from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. The selection spans a range of genres such as drama, thriller, documentary, and social realism, addressing complex issues like class, race, politics, and gender.
‘Kamli’ will air on September 10 at 1:45 a.m. UK time and will be available for streaming on Channel 4’s website afterward. The psychological drama set in a rural Pakistani village explores the lives of three women and delves into themes of love, despair, and redemption.
The narrative centres around Hina (played by Saba Qamar), who longs for her husband’s return from abroad after eight years. Her life turns when she meets Amaltas (Hamza Khawaja), a mysterious traveller, and falls in love. The film also follows Zeenat (Nimra Bucha), an artist struggling with marital issues and alcoholism. Khoosat’s direction masterfully blurs the lines between reality and illusion, offering a unique cinematic experience.
Last year, Khoosat won the Best Director Award for’ Kamli’ at the DC South Asian Film Festival, which also garnered awards at Belarus’s Listapad festival. Additionally, Sania Saeed received the Best Actress Award at the Mosaic International South Asian Film Festival in Mississauga for her performance in the film.
