AMMAN, Jordan: A US Embassy Jordan alert on August 1 advised Americans to consider departing the Middle East or prepare to leave if regional tensions escalate.
The US Embassy in Amman warned that travellers could face flight cancellations, periodic airspace closures and other disruptions. It urged passengers to confirm schedules directly with airlines.
Americans outside the Middle East should reconsider travelling to or through the region, the embassy said. It described the security environment as complex and vulnerable to unforeseen escalation.
The alert said Iran and groups supporting Tehran could target US interests overseas. It noted that diplomatic facilities, businesses and other locations associated with the United States had faced threats.

The embassy advised Americans in Jordan to avoid military bases, demonstrations, large gatherings and areas with a heavy police presence.
It also urged them to monitor local media, follow Jordanian authorities’ instructions and enrol in the Smart Traveller Enrollment Program.

Jordan remains under a Level 3: Reconsider Travel advisory because of terrorism and armed conflict. However, the State Department issued that designation on May 4 rather than raising the level after the August 1 alert.
The advisory said drone and missile threats had continued since US-Iran hostilities began on February 28. Washington ordered non-emergency US government personnel and their families to leave Jordan on March 2.
