Samsung Heavy Industries has received approval to begin construction of the first Samsung FLNG facility in the United States for the $2.9 billion Delfin LNG project off the coast of Louisiana.
The South Korean shipbuilder said on June 4 that it had been cleared to begin construction of the first floating liquefied natural gas unit for Delfin LNG, according to Korean media reports.
The Delfin project is the first floating LNG development in the United States. Industry observers view it as a possible model for future LNG export projects in North America.
Unlike traditional export terminals, Delfin will use multiple floating LNG units built to the same specifications. The model aims to improve operating flexibility, reduce capital costs and limit development risks.
Delfin LNG is developing the project as a private company, rather than through a major international oil company or state-owned energy producer. Samsung Heavy Industries will serve as the engineering, procurement and construction contractor.
The facility will combine nearshore and offshore FLNG features. It will house about 120 personnel and include self-propulsion, allowing it to move during hurricanes or other severe weather.
Samsung Heavy Industries said Delfin will be its first FLNG project, in which it will take full responsibility for the entire EPC scope.

“The Delfin project is the first FLNG project for which Samsung Heavy Industries will independently execute the full EPC scope,” a company official said.
The official added that Samsung aims to expand in the FLNG market through lower costs, optimised designs and reliable execution.
