WASHINGTON, United States: The Jeffries-Kushner meeting drew criticism from progressive Democrats after House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries defended talks with President Donald Trump’s son-in-law.
Jeffries said in a social media video Monday that Jared Kushner requested the meeting and that he agreed to discuss the affordability crisis.
The Democratic leader also said Kushner would not receive protection from congressional oversight. Kushner has no official role in the Trump administration.
Joseph Geevarghese, executive director of progressive group Our Revolution, said the meeting raised concerns about how Jeffries might lead the House if Democrats regain the majority.

Justice Democrats spokesperson Usamah Andrabi also criticised the meeting. His comments linked the controversy to Jeffries’ recent statement that he does not support Medicare for All legislation.
Jeffries later said in a radio interview that health care should be a right for every American. He added that Democrats could pursue different routes toward universal coverage.
The New York Times first reported that Jeffries and Kushner discussed housing, immigration and affordability. A source familiar with the talks said Kushner also suggested Jeffries meet White House Chief of Staff, Susie Wiles.

Jeffries told CNN Tuesday that his goal in Washington was to solve problems as well as make political arguments.
Some House Democrats privately questioned why Jeffries met Kushner, while others noted the two had previously worked together on criminal justice issues during Trump’s first term.
