The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has recently blocked more than 1.4 million websites for engaging in illegal activities under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) directives. During the fiscal year 2023-24 alone, PTA blocked 109,771 sites.

The PTA took down 33,634 sites yearly, citing defence and security threats. The authority also suspended 268 sites for blasphemous content and blocked 55,723 sites classified as unethical. Additionally, 3,618 sites faced restrictions under communal or hate speech concerns. An additional 13,422 websites were blocked for promoting religious hatred, while 1,058 sites associated with offensive material were suspended. Additionally, 2,428 sites were removed due to other illegal activities.

In a connected enforcement effort, PTA, alongside the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Cyber Crime Circle Karachi, executed a raid that seized 25 illegal mobile booster sets. This operation focused on a retailer allegedly selling unauthorized mobile boosters and amplifiers, according to a recent PTa press release.

Cybersecurity Awareness Initiatives

Additionally, PTA launched Cybersecurity Awareness Week 2024 from December 9 to 15. This initiative aims to increase digital safety awareness among individuals and consumers. The campaign focuses on online security, data privacy, and the legal frameworks governing cybercrimes, as outlined in the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has invited citizens, businesses, and educational institutions to engage in this campaign by following their social media handles and actively participating in discussions and content sharing.

The PTA hosts expert discussions to empower individuals and organizations with the necessary knowledge to safeguard against emerging cyber threats. This effort is part of PTA’s broader commitment to enhancing Pakistan’s cybersecurity landscape.
