Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are developing a Prince Harry Netflix war film based on Adam Jowett’s Afghan war memoir “No Way Out.”
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will produce the film through Archewell Productions. Tracy Ryerson, Archewell’s head of scripted content, will also produce.
Matt Charman, the Oscar-nominated writer of “Bridge of Spies,” is writing the screenplay for Netflix. The film will adapt Jowett’s account of a British military mission in Afghanistan in July 2006.
“No Way Out” follows Easy Company, a unit of paratroopers and Royal Irish Rangers. The soldiers held the District Centre of Musa Qala in Helmand Province while Taliban forces surrounded them.
The memoir describes 21 days and nights of combat. Jowett wrote about leading the unit as it faced repeated attacks while cut off and outnumbered.
The project has a personal link to Prince Harry. He served two combat tours in Afghanistan during 10 years in the British Army and reached the rank of captain.
The film comes under Archewell’s current first-look deal with Netflix. The arrangement followed changes to the couple’s earlier overall deal with the streamer.
Harry and Meghan have produced several Netflix projects since 2020. Their credits include “Harry & Meghan,” “Live to Lead,” “Heart of Invictus,” “Polo”, and “Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within.”
The couple also has other book adaptations in development. Those projects include Jasmine Guillory’s “The Wedding Date” and Carley Fortune’s “Meet Me at the Lake.”
