MORONI, United States: Rebeca Hafen died after a vehicle struck her while she was walking near Moroni, Utah, and her newborn son died days later after an emergency delivery.
The Rebeca Hafen crash occurred shortly before 8 a.m. Tuesday on Dairy Lane, Utah Highway Patrol told KSL-TV. Authorities said the 34-year-old was walking on the road shoulder when the vehicle hit her.
Hafen was taken to a hospital, where she later died from her injuries, KTVX reported. Doctors delivered her baby by emergency surgery and transferred him to a neonatal intensive care unit.
A family fundraiser later announced that the newborn had died despite medical efforts to save him. Hafen’s husband, Tyson Hafen, and the children were able to hold the baby and say goodbye before his death.

Police identified sunlight and limited visibility as contributing factors in the crash. Authorities had not identified the driver publicly and said criminal charges were not expected unless investigators determined that speed played a role.
Tyson Hafen later told KSL that he held no hard feelings toward the driver and described his wife as devoted to their children.

The family’s child count. PEOPLE describes Hafen as a mother of nine before the delivery, while KSL says the newborn was the couple’s ninth child.
