US President Donald Trump praised Pakistan’s role in Pakistan-US-Iran talks on Sunday, calling Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir “great people” during a Fox News interview.
Trump said he had “great respect” for Pakistan’s civilian and military leadership for their efforts to bring Washington and Tehran to the negotiating table.
The US president said he cancelled a planned visit to Islamabad by envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner because the trip would involve too much travel and expense.
“If they want to talk, they can come to us, or they can call us,” Trump said, referring to Iran.
Trump said Pakistani mediators would remain involved in the negotiation process between the United States and Iran.
He had earlier praised what he called the “kind and very competent leadership” of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir after Islamabad hosted the first round of talks on April 11.
