ISLAMABAD: The National Population Council has been established under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to address Pakistan’s rapid population growth, according to a notification issued Tuesday.
The notification said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will chair the council. Chief of Defence Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir has been named among its members.
The chief ministers of all four provinces will also sit on the council. The prime minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and the chief minister of Gilgit-Baltistan have also been included.
Federal ministers for planning, finance, health, education and law were appointed as members. The council will meet twice a year, according to the notification.

The Ministry of Population Planning will act as the council’s secretariat. Religious scholars, civil society members and private-sector representatives will also be included in the council’s work.
