Karachi, Sindh: The suspected Model Colony blast device was a firecracker, not a sophisticated explosive, the Counter-Terrorism Department investigation has found.
Investigative sources said injured youth Abdul Sami told police he had bought the firecracker for his cousin’s birthday celebration. The CTD had earlier registered a case under terrorism and explosives charges.
The case began after Sami was wounded while handling a shiny pen-like object he initially claimed to have found near the Model Colony Railway Track.
According to the initial First Information Report, Sami, a New Karachi resident, said the object exploded in his hand. The blast injured his fingers and face.
Sami was shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for treatment after the incident. Police cordoned off the area and collected forensic evidence because they suspected the object could be a “pen bomb.”

Officials said later findings and Sami’s statement indicated that the object was a firecracker bought for a family event, not an improvised explosive device.
The case details are now being reviewed in light of the new findings. Forensic analysis of the recovered material continues, while no arrests have been reported beyond Sami, who remains under medical care.
