TEHRAN, Iran: Iran summoned Ukraine’s chargé d’affaires after a Caspian Sea strike killed one sailor and injured another aboard an Iranian commercial vessel early on July 25, the Foreign Ministry said.

The ministry described the incident as a Ukrainian military attack that caused an explosion aboard the ship. However, its official statement did not identify the vessel, its cargo, the weapon used or its precise location.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy separately acknowledged long-range strikes against several Caspian targets. He said Ukrainian forces hit vessels used for military cargo shipments involving Iran and a warship.

Ukraine says it has struck several vessels in the Caspian Sea used to transport Russian military cargo to Iran. Reports suggest the cargo ships Port Olya 2 and Begey were hit. Zelenskyy did not identify the Iranian commercial vessel cited by Tehran. Therefore, the available public statements do not establish whether it was one of the military-cargo vessels claimed by Kyiv.

The Security Service of Ukraine said one targeted vessel transported military cargo between Iran and Russia while evading international sanctions, according to The Kyiv Independent.
