The Lahore Court High (LHC) on Monday barred the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) from recovery of taxes worth Rs700 million from the Minhaj-ul-Quran International – a welfare body founded by Dr Tahriul Qadri in 1981.
Minhaj-ul-Quran had filed an application with the LHC pleading that Minhaj-ul-Quran is a welfare organization and, therefore, it was given an exemption from paying any tax in 1982.
However, in order to victimize Minhaj-ul-Quran the present government sent a notice on July 9 for recovery of tax.
FBR lawyers told the court that after amendments in the taxation laws, the Minhaj-ul-Quran would have to pay taxes. But the court issued a stay order barring FBR to recover tax.
