NEW YORK, United States: The 9/11 anniversary marked 25 years since the September 11, 2001 attacks on Friday, with memorial ceremonies bringing together victims’ families, survivors, political leaders and other Americans.

The annual ceremony at Ground Zero in New York City included an additional moment of silence for people who later died from illnesses linked to the attacks.

All living former U.S. presidents attended the Manhattan ceremony, according to CBS News live coverage. Vice President JD Vance and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani were also present.

President Donald Trump spoke separately at the Pentagon, while other administration officials were expected at a remembrance event in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The anniversary also prompted reflection on security changes introduced after the attacks.

"We will always remember the victims and the families of September 11th, 2001."

"We will honor their lives. We will cherish their beautiful memories. And we will protect this country and its freedoms for every future generation."

CBS News national security contributor Samantha Vinograd said the United States transformed security procedures for air travel, government buildings, public gatherings and monuments after 2001.

She cited the creation of the Department of Homeland Security, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the National Counterterrorism Centre as major structural changes.

Vinograd said the terrorism threat had also changed, with technology-enabled foreign threats accompanied by a growing domestic terrorism challenge.
