After 13 illustrious seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, Jason Kelce, regarded as one of the NFL’s finest centres, has declared retirement.
The announcement came during a heartfelt press conference in Philadelphia, flanked by his family. Kelce’s decision follows speculation after the Eagles’ playoff defeat to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in January.
During the nearly 45-minute address, Kelce expressed gratitude to key figures in his career, including his wife Kyle, brother Travis, parents, coaches, and teammates. Overcome with emotion, he humorously admitted to being “vastly overrated” despite his hard work and dedication.
Kelce’s career spanned 193 regular-season and 12 postseason games, during which he earned seven Pro Bowl selections, six All-Pro honours, and a Super Bowl victory in 2018 against the New England Patriots. The elder Kelce brother, Travis, plays tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs. Jason will be eligible for consideration for the Hall of Fame in 2029.
Beyond the field, Kelce’s media presence is notable. His podcast with Travis, “New Heights,” is highly popular, and his on-camera skills were honed at an NFL Broadcasting and Media Workshop, earning him accolades. He was also named one of People’s Sexiest Men of the Year.
Before the 2023 season, Kelce pondered retirement, especially after the Eagles’ Super Bowl defeat to his brother’s team. Eagles coach Nick Sirianni’s unique persuasion, sending beer kegs convinced him to play another season. However, following a playoff loss and an increased profile in the media, Kelce has chosen to conclude his playing career.
