Tomblaine, France: A French plane crash killed 11 people Sunday after a skydiving aircraft went down shortly after takeoff from Nancy-Essey Airfield, authorities said.
The dead included the pilot, five trainee parachutists and five instructors, according to Reuters. The aircraft belonged to a parachute training school and crashed in Tomblaine, a town in northeastern France near Nancy.
The Guardian reported that the plane came down near a built-up area but caused no additional casualties on the ground.
The aircraft went down in a grassy field near the runway and narrowly missed nearby homes.
French authorities and air transport gendarmerie units opened a technical investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
Officials said an amber warning for extreme heat was in place in Meurthe-et-Moselle at the time, though they had not determined whether the temperature contributed to the crash.
