Partial Lunar Eclipse to Cover 96% of Moon for Billions

A partial lunar eclipse will cover about 96% of the Moon from August 27 into August 28, with more than 3 billion people able to see at least part of the event.

Nearly 1 billion people across North, Central and South America will have a complete view. Viewers in Europe, Africa and the Middle East will also see portions of the eclipse if weather conditions allow.

Earth will move between the Sun and Moon during the event. Its shadow will give the lunar surface a reddish-orange appearance.

However, the alignment will not be complete, so the event will remain a deep partial eclipse rather than a total “blood moon.”

Maximum coverage will occur shortly after midnight EDT. The partial phase will last more than three hours, while the full eclipse sequence will span about five and a half hours.

Viewers in Europe, Africa and the Middle East will see the Moon set before the eclipse ends. Hawaii and parts of the eastern Pacific will see the Moon rise after the event has already begun.

The eclipse will be the second lunar eclipse of 2026 and the fourth eclipse of the year. It follows a total solar eclipse that crossed Greenland, Iceland and Spain two weeks earlier.

The next total lunar eclipse is expected on December 31, 2028, with Asia and Australia in the strongest viewing position. North and South America will have to wait until 2029 for their next total lunar eclipse.
