Elon Musk Says Solar Power Will Become Humanity’s Primary Energy Source

As the global shift toward renewable energy accelerates, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has said solar power will inevitably become humanity’s dominant energy source.

Musk argued that rapid technological progress makes a solar-powered future unavoidable. He outlined this view in his latest master plan and reiterated it in public remarks made in January 2026.

According to Musk, a relatively small land area could meet enormous energy needs. He said that roughly 100 square miles of solar panels, combined with large-scale battery storage in regions such as Texas or New Mexico, could supply the United States’ entire electricity demand. Average US power consumption stands at about 460 gigawatts, he noted.

To frame the scale of the challenge, Musk referenced the Kardashev Scale, which measures a civilisation’s advancement by its energy use. He also shared orbital footage captured by SpaceX, using images of Earth to illustrate the vast and constant energy provided by the sun.

"Once you understand Kardashev Scale, it becomes utterly obvious that essentially all energy generation will be solar. A relatively small corner of Texas or New Mexico can easily serve all US electricity."

Musk said solar energy offers the most practical solution to the pressures faced by high-energy civilisations. He believes large-scale solar generation, paired with advanced battery storage, can address both the climate crisis and the rapidly rising electricity demand driven by artificial intelligence and data centres.

Critics continue to raise concerns about grid stability and long-duration energy storage. However, Musk pointed to strong growth in solar adoption during 2025 as evidence that the technology is advancing faster than many expected.

He added that continued improvements in efficiency, storage capacity, and manufacturing scale could turn solar into the backbone of the global energy system within the foreseeable future.
