ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet on Thursday approved the Defence Forces Act 2026 and amendments to the National Command Authority Act 2010 following changes introduced through the 27th Constitutional Amendment.
The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, approved the draft law to establish the legal and administrative framework for the office of the Chief of Defence Forces and the Chief of Defence Forces Headquarters.
The Prime Minister’s Office said the draft Defence Forces Act 2026 would now be presented before Parliament during its ongoing session for consideration and approval.
The cabinet also approved amendments to the National Command Authority Act 2010, which the government said had become necessary following the 27th Constitutional Amendment.

Those amendments will also be placed before Parliament for approval, according to the official press release.
The development follows the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) decision a day earlier to support key government legislation. PPP sources had said Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met President Asif Ali Zardari and discussed proposed legislation in the presence of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Faryal Talpur.
