KARACHI, Sindh: University Road lanes used by mixed traffic are targeted to reopen by September 15 as Frontier Works Organisation accelerates construction on Karachi’s Red Line BRT project.

The target was reviewed at a TransKarachi meeting on September 4. Officials also said the Meteorological flyover would be completed and opened to mixed traffic by September 20.

The left-side carriageway between Hassan Square and NIPA Bridge is scheduled to open during the third week of September. Officials attributed delays on that section to the installation of a new sewerage line serving buildings along University Road.

Construction near Safoora and NIPA is in its final stages, with rigid pavement work continuing at several locations. Officials said newly laid pavement cannot immediately carry traffic because it requires curing time before it can be opened.

Work at some locations has also been delayed by K-Electric underground crossings and other utilities, while a roughly 12-kilometre stormwater drainage system is under construction. These remaining works are targeted for completion by the end of September.

The September 15 target follows an earlier commitment to complete University Road’s mixed-traffic lanes by the end of July, a commitment that was not met. Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said on August 23 that authorities were now working to make the road fully motorable by mid-September.
