WASHINGTON, United States: President Donald Trump said two firefighters carried him away from an area near Ground Zero after the September 11 attacks, repeating a long-standing account of his presence there.
Trump made the remarks Tuesday at the Ellipse near the White House during an event ahead of the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks.
Officials displayed a piece of steel from the World Trade Centre at the ceremony. Trump said he was near what he called the United States Steel Building when people feared it could collapse.
He said two firefighters grabbed him and began carrying him away before he told them he could run himself. He has told a similar story before.

During a January 2016 campaign event in New Hampshire, Trump said two firefighters helped move him after people heard a screech and feared a nearby building might fall.
Trump has repeatedly said he visited the World Trade Centre area soon after the attacks and sent construction workers to assist recovery efforts.

However, the first responders at Ground Zero said they did not see him there. Trump also used Tuesday’s address to discuss the U.S. economy before returning to the September 11 anniversary.
He will speak Friday at a Pentagon commemoration. Vice President JD Vance will attend the annual World Trade Centre ceremony in New York.
