As Cyclone Biparjoy draws closer to Pakistan, all commercial flight operations are expected to be suspended.
NDMA Chairman, Lt General Inam Haider Malik, confirmed that the cyclone might land in Keti Bandar by Thursday afternoon. He noted the risk of urban flooding in Karachi and stated that some 62,000 people have been relocated to safer areas.
To manage the cyclone’s impact, the movement of small aircraft at Karachi Airport has been halted, and a decision on commercial flights is anticipated soon. He also indicated that if more areas become submerged, another phase of migration may follow.
Updates on Cyclone Biparjoy’s Path
Sherry Rehman, Climate Change Minister, has confirmed that the cyclone’s approach has already halted small aircraft operations in Karachi.
In a recent briefing, Rehman provided an update on Cyclone Biparjoy’s path. The cyclone has moved further north-northwest and is currently located about 340km south-southwest of Karachi. The cyclone is heading towards the country’s coastline, with winds blowing at 140km per hour.
Authorities are working in unison to prepare and take preventive measures. Some 75 relief camps have been established, and according to the Sindh government, all individuals from potentially affected areas have been evacuated.
Rehman has called on the public to avoid coastal areas and announced that the government would soon issue an advisory regarding small ships.
