RAWALPINDI: Surgeons at Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital removed a 285-gram eye Tumour from a three-day-old newborn from Jhelum district on July 21.
Doctors removed the affected eye to excise the congenital tumour after an emergency assessment found that its rapid growth posed a life-threatening risk.
The medical team comprised Prof Dr Tayyab Afghani, Dr Faizan Tahir, Dr Ali Raza Syed and Dr Aiman. Anaesthetists, nurses and other clinical staff assisted with the procedure.

The treating team said a newborn’s eyeball normally weighs about three grams. The removed tumour weighed about 95 times that amount, according to a report by the Associated Press of Pakistan.
Afghani, Al-Shifa’s senior consultant and head of its Orbit and Oculoplastic Department, said the infant’s condition had stabilised. Doctors were monitoring the newborn’s postoperative recovery.
The hospital described the procedure as Pakistan’s first documented successful treatment of a 285-gram congenital eye tumour in an infant of that age. It did not disclose the tumour’s pathological diagnosis or cite a published medical case report.
Afghani advised parents and healthcare providers to seek specialist assessment if a newborn develops persistent swelling, an enlarged eye or other unusual changes around the eye.
The hospital plans to fit the infant with a custom-made artificial eye after healing is complete. The prosthesis will support facial growth and appearance but will not restore sight in the removed eye.
