Air India Releases Rs25 Lakh Compensation to 166 Families of AI171 Crash Victims

Air India has announced that it has disbursed interim compensation of ₹25 lakh to the families of 166 victims of the AI171 plane crash, which resulted in the deaths of 229 passengers. This compensation includes payments to the families of 147 deceased passengers, as well as 19 individuals who died at the crash site. Additionally, the documents of 52 more families have been verified for payments.

Air India has confirmed that interim payments of Rs 25 lakh have been distributed to 166 families, while an additional 52 families are awaiting compensation release pending final verification. The airline stated, “We are progressively releasing compensation to verified families.” The process focuses on providing prompt support, with the Indian Ministry of Civil Aviation overseeing compliance to ensure transparency.

On June 12, 2025, a tragic crash involving the AI171 occurred in Gujarat, India, resulting in the deaths of 229 out of 230 passengers. Among those who perished were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian. The sole survivor managed to escape by jumping from the plane. The incident, reported by The Times of India, involved the aircraft striking buildings, which has led to investigations into safety protocols.

The compensation comes after reports of misidentified remains sent to UK families, which raised concerns about post-crash procedures. These payments are in accordance with India’s aviation policies, ensuring support during public scrutiny.
