BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan: Russia said Monday that a war-mediation formula involving Iran remained unclear ahead of President Vladimir Putin’s September 1 talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russian broadcaster Vesti that it was still difficult to determine what type of mediation could apply.

He said Pezeshkian would brief Putin on developments surrounding Iran and the Persian Gulf. The two presidents are scheduled to meet in Bishkek after Tuesday’s Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit events.

The Kremlin said their discussions would also cover bilateral relations between Russia and Iran. Peskov said Moscow remained committed to expanding its partnership with Tehran across a broad range of areas.

It is still difficult to determine what form of mediation could apply to the Iran war, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Monday ahead of talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Russia and Iran have strengthened formal ties under their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty, which Russia ratified in April 2025.

Russia had previously offered to assist diplomatic efforts surrounding Iran. In June, Peskov said Moscow was prepared to mediate if required and supported resolving the conflict through negotiations.

His latest comments indicate that the Kremlin has yet to settle on a workable mediation mechanism. Pezeshkian has also continued to publicly support negotiations.

During a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Bishkek on August 31, he said Iran was still seeking an agreement and argued that continued fighting served neither Iran nor the wider region.

Pakistan has separately pursued efforts to facilitate dialogue between Iran and the United States. Iran welcomed Islamabad’s attempts to promote de-escalation and a peaceful settlement during recent diplomatic contacts.
