The Sindh Government Qatar Hospital in Orangi Town has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the province’s first healthcare facility to use artificial intelligence (AI) to diagnose tuberculosis (TB).

On March 5, 2025, the hospital introduced the Cat 4 Integrated AI X-ray machine, a state-of-the-art device that accurately detects TB and chest infections within five minutes, transforming patient care across Pakistan.

How the AI Machine Operates

Dr. Rashid Siraj Khanzada, Medical Superintendent, detailed the operation of the Rs45 million device to the press. “The machine scans patients suspected of having TB or chest infections and converts the grayscale X-ray images into color-coded visuals, highlighting infected areas in red,” he explained.

This rapid AI-driven TB diagnosis method drastically reduces the traditional, days-long waiting period, effectively helping to control the spread of TB, which can potentially infect 15-20 people per untreated case.

The Sindh TB Programme funds the Cat 4 machine, which detects TB and identifies other pulmonary conditions. The device allows images to be sent via WhatsApp for quick consultations, enhancing the efficiency of medical advice and treatment. Plans are also in place to install a second unit at Ojha Hospital. “This technology enables us to pinpoint TB and initiate treatment swiftly immediately,” Dr. Khanzada added.

With a daily influx of 120-150 TB patients, Qatar Hospital has equipped its staff with specialized training and established a dedicated TB unit. This unit includes specific diagnostic and treatment rooms designed to leverage the full capabilities of this groundbreaking technology.

The introduction of AI in TB diagnosis at Qatar Hospital represents a monumental advancement in Pakistan’s ongoing battle against TB, setting a new standard in healthcare innovation and patient management.
