YouTube private messaging is returning seven years after the platform shut down its previous in-app chat feature, the company announced on Thursday.
The platform said the feature will allow users to share videos, tutorials, music videos and Shorts without leaving the YouTube app.
YouTube said users must be at least 18 years old to access direct messaging. The feature also requires age verification through the user’s account. YouTube said chats will be invite-only.
Users can start a chat by tapping the Message icon in the YouTube app, generating an invitation link and sharing it through another platform.
The recipient can then accept or decline the chat request. YouTube said community guidelines will apply to shared content and messages.

The company said the update addresses a top feature request from users who want to share videos with friends and family within the app.
The conflicting details on US availability: the feature was said to be available in the US and other regions, then later it was said it was not available in the US.
