In a notable development, X, formerly Twitter, plans to implement a new policy allowing blocked users to view public posts. Although blocked individuals cannot interact with these posts, the policy shift has sparked concerns over potential harassment and privacy breaches.
Elon Musk, the owner of X, declared this change on Monday, explaining that the “block function will stop interactions but not prevent viewing of public posts.” This adjustment means that users can still see public tweets from those they have blocked.
Previously, the block feature on X restricted blocked users from accessing any content from the blocker, including posts and follower details. The new policy allowing visibility of posts has received mixed feedback from users.
Some defend the update as a way to deter users from bypassing blocks through alternate accounts or logging out. However, others fear it may facilitate harassment, enabling blocked users to track and monitor individuals who have blocked them, which could ease targeted abuse.
Musk has criticized the block function, suggesting it is ineffective and advocating for a more robust mute option. Despite debates, the block button on X will still restrict blocked users from engaging with content.
This change is among several controversial adjustments Musk has made since acquiring X. The platform has been scrutinised for its misinformation and harmful content management. The impact of this new policy on user experience and X’s reputation has yet to be determined.
