Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to press freedom on World Press Freedom Day. They praised media workers for defending the truth and public awareness.
Organisers are observing the day this year under the theme “Shaping a Future at Peace”. President Zardari said responsible journalism, credible information and truth were essential for democracy, national unity and media freedom.
He warned that misinformation, disinformation, misuse of artificial intelligence, and algorithmic manipulation could distort public discourse. In addition, pressure from powerful technology platforms may weaken democratic values.
Zardari said Pakistan’s constitutional commitment under Articles 19 and 19-A protected free expression and access to information. He added that press freedom carried responsibilities of accuracy, balance and public trust.
The president praised the media’s role during Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos, saying journalists helped counter false narratives and maintain national cohesion.
He paid tribute to journalists who lost their lives while pursuing the truth. Also, he called on federal and provincial governments to ensure safer working conditions and enact laws for media professionals.
