Wimbledon, one of the most esteemed tennis tournaments globally, is about to revolutionize the fan experience by integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into its commentary system.
The leading technology giant, IBM, revealed this exciting development on Wednesday, confirming the incorporation of their AI-powered commentary tool in all video highlights during this year’s Wimbledon.
The AI commentary feature will be accessible to fans through the Wimbledon website and app. It will allow users to switch on and off the audio commentary and captions for key moments during the matches. This innovative technology aims to offer immersive commentary for matches outside Wimbledon’s Show Courts, which already benefit from live human commentary.
To make this possible, experts collaborated with Wimbledon organizers to train the AI system in the unique language of tennis. This latest innovation builds upon Wimbledon’s existing use of AI, which includes match insights, highlight reels, and a power index leaderboard. The AI system will also offer a draw analysis for the singles draw, estimating players’ chances of reaching the final.
AI And Human Elements
While introducing AI commentary as a leap forward, Kevin Farrar, IBM’s sports partnerships leader, emphasized that the technology is intended to supplement rather than replace the human element in sports commentary. Farrar underlined the irreplaceable value of renowned tennis figures like John McEnroe, stating, “You can’t replace John McEnroe doing commentary; that human element always needs to be there.” In Farrar’s view, AI serves as an enhancement to the overall commentary experience.
Wimbledon 2023, scheduled to kick off on July 3 and conclude on July 16, continues to align with the broader trend of embracing technology in tennis. In April, the men’s ATP Tour unveiled plans to replace on-court line judges with electronic line calls starting in 2025. The incorporation of AI seeks to optimize accuracy and consistency across tournaments.
AI A Growing Trend
IBM’s foray into AI-generated commentary isn’t just limited to tennis. In April, the technology was employed during golf’s Master’s tournament, offering insights and analysis for over 20,000 video clips. As the world of sports continues to embrace technological advancements, AI is proving instrumental in enhancing the viewing experience and delivering comprehensive coverage to fans worldwide.
