The Italy travel advisory remains at Level 2 after the U.S. State Department updated its guidance Thursday, urging Americans to use increased caution because of terrorism and petty crime.
The department did not raise Italy’s advisory level. Instead, it revised the summary while warning that terrorist violence and other terrorist activity remain possible in the country.
The advisory also tells travellers to watch for opportunistic crime in popular tourist areas and on public transportation, including trains.
Officials cited purse snatching, pickpocketing and vehicle break-ins among common crimes affecting foreign visitors. Americans were advised to remain alert in tourist areas, monitor local news and be prepared to change their plans if conditions shift.

Recent terrorism-related arrests have added context to the warning. Italian news agency ANSA reported in August that authorities arrested a 16-year-old in northern Italy
On international terrorism-related charges after investigators alleged he circulated jihadist and pro-ISIS material online.
Another 16-year-old was arrested near Bologna in June after authorities allegedly found jihadist material and weapons-making manuals.
